The driver of the vehicle that collided with Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere’s car faces two counts of culpable homicide and another of reckless and negligent driving.
Mhere died in the crash in Johannesburg on Saturday. He was behind the wheel when another car collided with his on the driver’s side. A passenger in his Mhere’s car was also killed.
His father survived the accident and is recovering at home.
The driver of the other vehicle was not tested for alcohol.
Mhere joined the Top Billing lifestyle programme in 2010. His manager Lorraine Meizel says, “He was going places. He was the most amazing human being; gentle, kind, loving, honest and hardworking. He was everything; he was the most extraordinary person.”
It is believed he was en route to OR Tambo International Airport to attend the J&B Met taking place in Cape Town on Saturday afternoon.
SABC Spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, in a statement says the “country fell in love with the ever energetic Mhere when he made his debut on SABC’s Top Billing Presenter search in 2010. His meaningful contribution to the show will remain and continue to inspire young people who looked up to him as a presenter and a public figure.”
Kganyago says Mhere won the hearts of the old and young people alike.
Tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, friends and fans. Lorna Lukhele, Mhere’s co-presenter on Top Billing took to Instagram to express her loss when she heard the news.
